The Key Pointers To Choosing The Right Halter For Your Horse

Choosing the right halter is important – and you will be able to get the right halter for your horse only after you gather a bit of an insight on halters.

Halters rest against the soft sensitive part behind the horse’s ears, so if the halter is ill fitting, the horse will feel the discomfort. And if the pressure from the halter is too much to bear, the horse is going to fight and resist it. What you need therefore is a halter that’s a perfect fit. Because a halter that fits well will not hurt the horse, in fact, the horse might not even feel it.

Here are the halter options for you to choose from:

The better you understand the workings of halter – you will choose the right halter that much faster.

  • Leather Halters: they are traditional and comfortable – not to mention the most frequently used show halter. You can choose from soft refined leather or you could use a rugged and hard turnout halter. And you can select from a variety of thickness. But a leather halter needs care – you need to keep it soft and pliable – the moment leather cracks, it is no good any more.
  • Web Halters: you can select from a variety of sizes, fits and materials. Make sure to check for the layers because the more layered the halter, the better it will perform. But the inexpensive single-ply halters are not very long-lasting, and it is always better to go for solid, and easy to maintain hardware – they will last a lot longer.

  • Rope Halters: rope halters are basically a rope tied into knots as a halter – and some might have a lead rope tied on for lack of any hardware to clip the lead on to. As long as the knots are new, you can readily adjust the knots and the halter to suit the horse…but after a point of time the knots no longer yield. But make sure to use a thick rope. The thinner the rope, the horse will hurt all the more. And softer ropes are easier to put on and lie better against the horse’s flesh without creating a stinging pressure like the thin ropes.

But your job doesn’t end with just choosing the correct halter for your horse…you need to know how to put it on for your horse. So here are two back to back videos guiding you in the art of putting on a halter to a horse.

The next video shows you a few more tricks to halter your horse.

Now you not only know about choosing the right halter for your horse, but also how to put it on to it…without hurting the horse in the process.

Instead of taking a risk and hurting the sensitive skin of your horse, choose the right halter. It helps both you and your horse.
