The Basics Of Training Your Horse – Tips And Advice

When you bring a new horse home, it is just like a baby – needing your care and attention. And along with care your horse also needs to learn – and that is why you need to know the basics of training your horse.

Horse training, ideally, is something that you should do with the help and instructions of an expert. But even so, we are just giving you a few pointers here. These are the basic things you need to keep in mind.

  1. Horse training means you need to know what you are doing.
  2. Make sure you also know what the basics that you will need to teach your horse are.
  3. When starting the training, start with the simplest things firs and graduate to more complex matters later – neck reining should be the first step in training, followed by more complex things.
  4. Make sure you are training the horse for its specific age range – not all horses will accept the same kind of training.

And now for some training basics

We could have gone through a lengthy list of to-dos, but we thought it best to bring you a video that actually shows you what you are trying to achieve. Mind you, this is a horse that has been a few days in training and has been broken right. To start off, your boy won’t be. And so, you need to make sure that you take things slow and stay patient.

Now for the video:

  • Your horse may bite.
  • It isn’t able to understand what you tell him.
  • The horse bucks when ridden.
  • It resists getting caught.

Now for what could be causing these problems and what you can do:

  • It could be health issues.
  • It could also be that the horse is getting the wrong signals from you.
  • It could even mean that the presence of other people at the time of training is distracting the horse.

  1. Don’t rush your horse – take it slow.
  2. Give rewards and treats to tell him that he’s doing the right thing.
  3. Don’t get angry or frustrated – your horse doesn’t understand these feelings.
  4. Don’t use violence to train – it will just ensure that your horse is afraid of you and that will hamper his training.
  5. Make sure you plan tasks that you will be able to complete in the time you have – and basic discipline is essential for the horse to learn.
  6. Your training sessions should be uninterrupted. So make sure you have everything at hand before you start and ensure you will not be disturbed.
  7. Each small step – every small development – is a big development with a horse – and especially a more stubborn one. So keep that in mind.

However, in spite of these guidelines, training your horse isn’t a task for beginners. For the time being you can do so with the help of a trainer. But once you are more seasoned, then you too can try and train a young horse by yourself.
